In the financial services industry, there are generally two ways of obtaining financial advice: one is given by Stockbrokers and the other is given by Financial Advisors. While many investors are not even aware differences exist, one of the main differences is that investment advisors have a fiduciary duty to always act in the best interests of their clients.
In a TD Ameritrade Survey, the following was learned:

As a fee based advisory firm, we charge our client’s a fee for investment advice, instead of earning commission* to help ensure that the appropriate products are chosen based on the client’s best interest and not based on the commission generated.
